Producing Your Own Content: The Basics
What makes a member of an adult paysite renew their membership? There are a number of reasons but the major one is that they can get something at that site that they cannot get anywhere else. Many adult sites are just carbon copies of one another offering the same or similar pictures, feeds, and videos that are all produced by the larger content companies in the industry. So, how does one set their website apart and make their content offering unique? There are basically two ways that you can do this. You can have someone produce some exclusive content for you or you can produce your own. Having someone else produce it for you is costly and does not reap as many benefits as would be possible if you produced your own. By doing your own content, you are not just limited to putting it on your site, but you can resell it to other webmasters if you wish.
Many webmasters shy away from producing their own content because they fear that it will cost them a fortune and will become too time intensive. Well, I am here to tell you that producing your own content can be easy and does not have to require a huge investment, if it is done right. Many webmasters that try to produce their own material go out and buy the top of the line equipment, rent photo studios, hire professional models and end up spending tens of thousands of dollars. If this is what you want to do then go ahead and be my guest, but it can be much, much simpler than that. If this is your first time producing content or if your website has a smaller membership base than some of the mega-sites out there, all you need to do is keep it simple and stick to the basics.
The most popular niche on the adult Internet is amateur; glamour or porn star content sells better in videos or magazines. Shooting amateur content does not require you to be a professional photographer. Basically all you need to get started producing your own content is a digital camera, a digital camcorder (if you are going to be doing video), some editing software, and some models. The first step is to purchase yourself a digital camera. For amateur type content, you do not need the top of the line model. A mid-range digital camera will work just fine for a beginner wishing to shoot amateur content for the Internet. Check out DPReview for digital camera reviews.
Next, you need to find yourself some amateur talent that is willing to model for you. It is easier and less expensive to find models that are willing to do softcore porn rather than hardcore. There are not as many women who are willing to have sex on camera, and those that do will charge more. Finding girls who will engage in softcore activity such as solo, toys, and girl/girl is much more feasible. There are many online amateur modeling agencies, such as One Model Place, where you can search for available models in your area. The talent will post a profile, including a picture, what they are willing do, and their rates. You can then contact ones that suit your needs. Another good way to attract amateur talent is to put an ad in your local newspaper if they in fact have an adult classified section. Lastly, you can ask for recommendations on the adult Webmaster boards. Most amateur models will charge anywhere from $50 to $200 for an hour’s work with usually a 3 hour minimum. After you shoot a few models you can often find more talent through them, usually friends or girls they have worked with before on other shoots.
When dealing with amateur talent, you want to be very aware of all of the legalities that are involved. You must be in compliance with Title 18 U.S.C. Sec. 2257 if you are in the United States, and even if you arent it is a very good idea to follow these rules as your content will most likely be involved in the U.S. market. Also you will want to find out what the obscenity laws are for your country or region and you will want to ensure that your models are of age for your particular area. You must obtain photocopies of two pieces of ID from every model, with at least one piece containing a picture and you must have them sign model release forms of which you will keep copies of on record. You can find the documentation that is needed on the Net and then customize them to suit your needs. I would strongly suggest, that if you can afford to, consult your lawyer and have them draw up the documents.
Once you have your talent and equipment you can begin to shoot your content. You will want to be prepared with what kind of shots that you need and what exactly you are looking for from your model. Any special things you want your model to do I strongly suggest discussing up front, if models arent expecting certain things, they tend to get uneasy and this will make your shoot miserable. You will also want to have the area where you will be shooting ready and set up with whatever background and props you will be using. It is also important that the room be set up with the proper lighting. Halogen lights are the least expensive and they are the easiest to use for a beginner. When the model shows up you do not want to waste their time and yours by not being ready. Also, make your models feel as comfortable as possible when they are shooting by acting easy-going yet professional.
It is better to have both video and picture content if possible because some members may prefer one type to the other. After you have shot your content, you will need to edit it and make it web-ready. There are some pretty inexpensive software programs available that will allow you to do this fairly easily. If you want to spend a few dollars, Adobe Photoshop is great for editing photos and Adobe Premiere is top notch software for editing video. Once it is done and edited, it is your choice whether you are going to limit it to just your site, or you are going to re-sell it to other webmasters. My suggestion would be to keep it just on your site for a specified time period, say six months and then re-sell it to other webmasters.
